Since launching this site in May 2014 it is now heading towards 80,000 visitors
Welcome to Clacton Through The Lens !
The main reason I have created this website is to show the many changes to Clacton -on-Sea since I started taking photos back in the early 1980`s mainly with my faithful 35mm Nikon FE2 !
I attended a Clacton History Society meeting back in 1990, the subject was simply Clacton during the Victorian era with many images, taken by a Francis Frith who was an English photographer who travelled all round England photographing nearly every town and city. This gave me inspiration to go out and take images in Clacton, then hopefully they too will become relevant to the history of the town !
So between 1990 and 1992 I set about photographing Clacton as it was at that point in time :- key buildings, seafront, pier etc.
There are a few iconic buildings which sadly I did not get to photograph - to name just a few :-
The Odeon Cinema / Toyland - ( Argos / Thing me Bobs )
Grimwade and Clarke - ( McDonalds )
Cook and Eve`s - ( Clinton Cards )
I took over 300 photographs all on 35mm film along with several rolls of slide film. This was just the start of a BIG project as Clacton is constantly changing ! A number of images for this project/website were originally sourced a few years back but got shelved as I just did not have the time to commit to it. Now after many hours of sourcing, scanning , repairing and sizing - including trips up to the loft ( as most of this material was all shot on slides and film).
Finally here is the finished website, all images taken by myself unless otherwise stated with -*
In May 2012 I launched a range of Clacton postcards all taken over recent years.
There are now 53 designs available, so far over 18,000 sales to various local outlets.
I do hope you enjoy looking through my images on this website and I expect it will bring back many happy memories.
